How Long Until a New Console?

Chris Morris, from Yahoo!’s Plugged In blog, asks the question, “Where are the new consoles?”. Sure, we have an upcoming handheld (the 3DS), but how far off until we see a successor to the Wii, or even the 360 or PS3? Though the real question asked in the blog relates to the reason why we might have to wait at least a few more years before we even see what the next generation looks like.
The blog gives two main points as to why the next console generation won’t be arriving anytime soon. Morris says that, “the cost of making triple-A games has soared” (with some games costing around $100m to make), and that many developers feel that anyone has yet to, “come close to tapping the full potential of any machine”. The blog continues to mention how the current generation is still in high enough demand, as well as the fact that new technology for each console is only just starting to pick up.

PLAYSTATION MOVE!
It might also have something to do with the fact that this generation of consoles is built to be software-upgraded. The console makers have designed themselves into a corner, so to speak. Right now, the consoles are still new enough and the potential for software upgrades is a very viable option. Combine that with the global recession (or recession-like financial state) we’re in, and people simply won’t buy the next gen consoles. Not enough to make it worth it. Think of it like this; this generation of consoles are full fledged modern computers. If you buy a $2200 Alienware PC, the only operating system they have available for it is Windows 98. Because of Windows 98 can never support the hardware in a modern computer TO ITS FULLEST POTENTIAL, the computer is not as good as it can be. This is the same boat Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are facing right now. The operating systems on these consoles are in no way tapping the full power of the hardware yet.
I honestly believe we will see either free or purchasable operating system upgrades for these consoles before we see new console hardware. There have already been a lot of updates to the OS on each of the consoles, enough that what you can see the differences between the original releases and what can be seen today.
Console gamers – Welcome to the world the PC gamers have endured for decades. Help yourself to the cookies and coffee, and take a seat. We’ll be starting this session shortly. :j
^^He speaks truth.
If you think about it, all we’ll be seeing are peripherals and minor upgrades for possibly the next 5 years.
The Playstation Move is not going to be good. All Sony is doing is copying the best company ever, NINTENDO!!!
