The Last Story – Multiplayer Details

It was recently announced that the upcoming Wii RPG, The Last Story, will have an online multiplayer feature; today we have a few more details on the competitive and co-operative game modes, courtesy of Famitsu. Competitive mode pits players against each other in a fixed time limit battle, while co-operative mode has players working together to fight a monster (perhaps in the same style as Monster Hunter, though details are scarce). Either mode supports up to six players. You can select from characters in the game, each featuring unique abilities–for example, Elza is listed as a knight/soldier who can expand magic circles. Characters that cast magic, however, will need time to cast a spell because of the game’s Gathering mechanic that requires no interruptions. If you’re hit while casting, the spell is broken. Whatever character you use, it seems that you’ll have plenty of strategies to consider.
Famitsu also touches upon the extensive customization promised in The Last Story. Characters will have two equipment slots for weapons and two for armor. Armor comes in various types, such as “feather,” “heavy,” and “hunter”–the type affects the appearance and the abilities of the armor. In addition, pieces of armor have their own levels, also affecting appearance and ability. More surprising is the ability to customize the look of the armor by removing pieces or coloring it with paint (made from materials you find during your quest). These changes are purely cosmetic; they won’t affect the abilities or quality of the armor, only the appearance.
Other details from Famitsu include a new character, General Trista, known as “The Empire’s Greatest Treasure.” It’s not clear whether he will be an ally or enemy during the game–screenshots show him conversing with Elza as well as dueling him. There is also a brief look at two areas of Ruli City, the Central Plaza, a landmark area of the city that connects the north and south parts via a large bridge, and Marche, a major shopping area. The prices of goods in each shop fluctuates daily, giving the area a living, organic feel. Potentially, you could even buy items for cheap one day, then sell them for profit the next! If nothing else, this exhibits the level of detail being poured into The Last Story.
