A recent Google job posting for YouTube is hinting at an upcoming video service for game consoles.

The job description lists the following responsibilities:

  • Build the next generation game-console-based TV experience with You Tube video content.
  • Deliver a compelling lean back experience with monetization and e-commerce offerings (ie, pay-per-stream, ads).
  • Integrate and optimize with distribution channels and devices including all major game platforms.
  • Develop leading edge User Interfaces and delight users with innovative media rich solutions.

From the looks of things, this seems like it could be something similar to console streaming for Netflix, or the more recently launched Hulu Plus, although no details about the actual product being developed have been given.  Also, the job description references next generation consoles, but mentions the current generation of consoles under the job requirements, leaving the actual platforms for such an application still somewhat of a mystery.

Would you personally use this application over viewing YouTube on your computer or wireless device?

I’d definitely like to see YouTube stream easily to a Nintendo 3DS. I know there’ll be a browser on the 3DS next month, but I don’t know how well YouTube will work on it. So if YT can get do this, then all the power to them. :-)

There’s nothing in the job posting about the 3DS, but I don’t see why they can’t (or shouldn’t) do it. Netflix is supposed to be available for 3DS eventually, and the 3DS would be a good candidate to encourage YouTube’s 3D video support.
