~The New Fan Fiction of the Week~
(Banner gnomes work on our banner as we speak. Be Patient.)
Welcome! This is The New Fan Fiction of the Week. It features minor differences from the previous version, and simply serves as a replacement for the old one as the Administrator of it has lost interest in Fan Fiction. For those whom are new to this thread, The Fan Fiction of the Week is a contest that takes place weekly as the title says. Each week, starting Friday, the thread is opened up to nominations for entrants. You may enter your own fiction or another persons with their permission. On Wednesday or Thursday, depending on the number of entrants that week, I will collect the entrants and compile them into a list for our judges to view. There, they will compose comments on the top 3 fan fictions, (Or if they feel lazy, just organize them into a ranking list.) and PM them to me by the time I place the next list of entrants. Before I organize a list of entrants, I will announce the winner of the previous week and their fiction will be floated. (As soon as the mods can do so.) Plus, the winners of First, Second, and Third, will get access to our special Sigs and Add-Ons for winners. Easy, right?
RulesNot Quite, for you see, so our poor judges don't have to deal the fictions of everyone and their dog, we have rules for entered fan fictions.
1) All Fan Fictions entered must follow the stated Nsider2 rules. This is obvious and shouldn't even need to be posted. If your Fan Fiction breaks any rules, it will not be considered.
2) Generally, entered Fan Fictions entered should at least have 5 chapters with a good length on them before being entered. This is for our judges sake. It's hard to judge a Fan Fiction based on one chapter.
3) All Fan Fictions are eligible to win.
4) Please do not spam the board.
5) If you win First/Top placing, then you must wait 4 weeks before entering the same fan fiction. If you won Honorary Mention, 2nd, or 3rd place, you need to wait 2 weeks before entering the same fan fiction. You may however, enter other fan fictions.
6) If a judge would like to enter their fan fiction, they are disqualified from judging for that week.
7) You may only enter one of your own fan fictions per week. Otherwise, you'll be up for all the awards and that's not nice to other competitors.
8) Do not share the FotW Sigs or Addons. They are for the winners only.
9) If there is 4 or less entries in a week, there will only be Top and Honorary Mention awarded. If there are 5 or more, there will be First, Second, and Third place.
10) Be kind to others of the thread. Do not flame a judge on their decision or a person for their fan fiction winning.
The StaffNow that you know of what goes into this contest, let's meet who runs it.
The Big BossQUOTE
Hal -Otacon- Emmerich
-Otacon- runs the New Fan Fiction of the Week. All processing of the contest goes through him. He determines tie-breakers as well as judges when no judges submit anything. He cannot enter any Fan Fictions due to his position.
Elite JudgesThese people have previous experience in judging whether in ZORAPRIME's Fan Fiction of the Week or from the original Nsider.

While I do like seeing new practices being done in writing a story, quality will always hold precedence over uniqueness. If a story does something new, but does it poorly, I'm not going to award it over one that does something tried-and-true, but does it splendidly. I have a very high tolerance for cliches and repetition, but if I'm falling asleep and guessing half of the plot twists with no hints beforehand, there will be problems. I also am a stickler for correct English; while one or two missing punctuation marks or a misused word here and there is tolerable, I don't enjoy reading giant blocks of text with no paragraph breaks and with half of the words unreadable. Realism is my final requirement: breaking the laws of gravity or doing unrealistic moves is irritating if there's not an adequate explanation for it. Just follow those rules, and your story will be fine.

To be on the higher end of the scale, I must see the following:
-Great Spelling/Grammar (miniscule, accidental mistakes are acceptable)
-A wonderfully made plot (well thought-out)
-Characters that are capable of developing at an acceptable pace
Now then, for the other way around, this is how one gets to be on the lower end of the scale:
-Either bad or horrible Spelling/Grammar
-Completelly 100% cliché plot
-Horrible characters

Here is how I judge fanfics:
1. Quality: I would never pick a fanfic that was one paragraph over someone who obviously spent time putting more detail in a fic.
2. Quantity: I always see if a person has been working on a fanfic for a long time versus someone who has just posted two chapters. I usually like seeing dedication to a fic rather than a few posts.
3. Personal Touch: I love seeing unique and different fics like pikmin fics over the standard Mario fics. I like seeing someone stretch outside of the norm.
4. Creativity: I always look for someone to try and take a fic in a new and unique direction rather then do the same old thing and try to make a story out of it. For example, if someone does a Mario fic but introduces new characters a new plot and tries to take the series in a whole different direction, I appreciate that more than someone who just does a standard mario fic.
5. Grammar: Usually I wait till I've read a bunch of fics before standard english plays any part in my decision making process. If a fic is poorly written to the point where it makes no sense that I will not bother reading it or giving it a top spot. If I am having a hard time deciding a favorite based off of the categories already stated I will start pulling out my dictionary and spell check to make sure the author is using correct words. I usually never have to do this but it came up once or twice in the 2 years I was a judge so I figure its something i try to base my decision on ON OCCASION.
6. X-Factor: Last but not least I need to see a fic which has been written with that desireable X-Factor. IF all of the categories (minus nitpicky grammar) fail to determine a winner for me I try to tell how an author writes based on their own personal usage of everything. If it is in a way that is more appealing or just written in their own special way, the it will get better judge marks from me.

How original is it? If the fic is a direct sequel then I will critisize it all the more, especially if it's a Twilight Princess sequel (I'm growing sick of those). How interesting are the characters? I don't like generic characters nor do I like over-baked characters. The characters must also be realistic and true to human nature for the most part (if they are human). How well-planned is the plot? I will have a very hard time reading a story if the plot is easily discernable, unoriginal, or if it has the "Prison Break Syndrome" (the Prison Break Syndrome is how I identify plots that have so many twists that it ends up becoming over-the-top, or ironically predictable). How faithful is the fic to the world it takes place in? If the story deviates greatly from the familiarity of the series it pertains to, then it should be able to show the readers why. How well-done is the description? If I can picture it as if I'm there, then it's good. If I get lost part-way through, then it needs work. How many grammar/spelling mistakes are there? If it becomes unreadable, then I won't bother reading any farther. How does the presentation of the fic and the fics layout look? If it is appealing to read and if the thread is easily navigable when trying to traverse through it, then it is good.
JudgesThese are people new to the job, but are plenty trusted in their position.

I usually grade a fic from a scale of 1-10, if I am asked to judge a fic I look at how well it's organized and planned, I look as well to see if I can get get a clear view on where this story is going and how well the author is directing it at the audience. I try to see if the common detail, grammar/punctuation, and sentence construction is acceptable enough so it's understandable. I will sometimes overlook grammar mistakes if the author acknowledges that he/she has made the mistake but wants to continue doing it since it's how they're comfortable writing.
